I thought surely the memories would die. But they continued to haunt me. The angry faces of my captors. The abuse and the beatings. The burning shame at the unspeakable things I’d been forced to do.

Dear God, I’m so afraid. I can’t go back there.

When Gina Cavallo finally escaped from her traffickers and returned to her childhood home, she soon recognized that her friends and family couldn’t ever comprehend the otherworldly nightmare she’d endured for nearly three years. And she had no interest in revisiting those experiences either. So she returned to an old habit: She buried the memories of that hideous ordeal deep down inside, where she kept all the other dirty secrets of her life. And there they stayed for many years.

But even the deepest buried memories eventually resurface. When a dramatic meeting at church brought her secrets back to mind, fresh and raw, Gina recognized that it was finally time to face her past and find healing from her brokenness. She knew God wanted to free her from the dark fear and shame of those memories. And she knew she couldn’t do any of this alone—she had to start by telling her husband.

A Survivor’s Secrets is a powerful story of the often-overlooked aftermath of survival and the courage it takes to confront and overcome the demons of one’s past. Gina Cavallo tells of the astonishing power of hope, healing, and the unassailable freedom found in God’s redeeming love.
