The existing materials were streamlined (and in some areas restructured) to provide space for extensive updates on new topics and recent developments without notably lengthening the book. The book covers central issues with appropriate depth and breadth and contains optional extensions into additional topics; as a result, it gives professors the flexibility to use the book in connection with a variety of IP courses and to choose the areas they wish to emphasize.

Charlotte y Peter Fiell son dos autoridades en historia, teoría y crítica del diseño y han escrito más de sesenta libros sobre la materia, muchos de los cuales se han convertido en éxitos de ventas. También han impartido conferencias y cursos como profesores invitados, han comisariado exposiciones y asesorado a fabricantes, museos, salas de subastas y grandes coleccionistas privados de todo el mundo.
