Many things have shaped Ruth Derrick's life and her journey as a writer. A rural Midwest upbringing, a strong work ethic, and a close-knit family defined her early years and perspective. Adult life has included marriage, three children, and a tour overseas where she fell in love with teaching. Upon returning to the U.S., she pursued a degree in English and a graduate certificate in Appalachian Studies. An early interest in writing re-emerged as life experience and a need to explore past memory called it forth. In the years since she lost her husband, writing poetry has been both a means to process loss and a pathway to a more meaningful faith. She resides in her transplanted home of SW Virginia, teaching, enjoying the outdoors, and traveling whenever possible.
