Despite bombings and unrest in their city, the market continues to not just function, but to flourish - celebrating culture, cuisine and agriculture. It's very existence is as an act of resistance against sectarian violence." - Rene Redzepi "Lebanese culture served on a plate." CNN
"If I was surprised, it was at what Kamal is doing at Souk el Tayeb, bringing cooks from different social, political and regional sectors." - Chef Anthony Bourdain

KAMAL MOUZAWAK is a chef, television personality, writer, and creator of the first farmers' market in Beirut, Souk el-Tayeb, which preserves food traditions and the culture of sustainable agriculture in Lebanon. Community-minded projects like this inspired the filmmaker Iara Lee to partner with Mouzawak in starting Make Food Not War, a nonprofit organization that aims to promote human rights, conflict resolution, and understanding by raising awareness of "a shared culture of food." Kamal has been recognised as an Ashoka Arab World Fellow; Ashoka Fellows are leading social entrepreneurs in the Arab World who are recognized through Ashoka‘s rigorous selection process to have innovative solutions to social problems and the potential to change patterns across society on a national-scale. A well-known personality in the Arab world, Mouzawak worked as a full-time travel writer, and then a food writer. In 2003, he began weekly appearances on the cooking show "Sohtak bil Sahenn," or "Your Health in Your Plate," a program hosted by Mariam Nour, a Lebanese macrobiotics and spirituality guru. Broadcast via satellite by the Lebanese television station NTV, it had a fan base that spanned the Arab world, and he frequently traveled to Arab cities to host cooking workshops.
