Inhaltsangabe

A Concise Anglo-Saxon Dictionary is a classic reference work for students, scholars, and readers working with Old English language and literature. J. R. Clark Hall's dictionary gives compact, practical access to Anglo-Saxon vocabulary, helping readers move through the language of Beowulf, religious prose, chronicles, poetry, homilies, laws, riddles, and the wider body of early English writing. Designed for use rather than display, the dictionary remains valuable because it is focused, direct, and built around the needs of readers encountering Old English texts. Its entries support translation, vocabulary study, literary reading, and historical language work, making it a useful companion for students of medieval literature, English philology, early British history, and the development of the English language. Readers working with Old English, Anglo-Saxon literature, medieval studies, historical linguistics, and English language history will find A Concise Anglo-Saxon Dictionary a practical and durable tool. It belongs on the same shelf as grammars, readers, and editions of early English texts: a compact guide to the words of England before Chaucer, Shakespeare, and modern English.

Über die Autorin bzw. den Autor

J. R. Clark Hall was an English scholar, lexicographer, and translator best remembered for his work on Old English language and literature. His Concise Anglo-Saxon Dictionary became a widely used reference for students and readers of Anglo-Saxon texts, offering a practical route into the vocabulary of early English prose and poetry. He also produced an influential prose translation of Beowulf, further connecting his name with the study and teaching of Old English.Clark Hall's work belongs to the period when philology, textual study, and medieval language scholarship were central to English literary education. His dictionary remains useful because it serves a clear purpose: helping readers understand the words of a language that stands at the root of English but is distant enough to require careful study. For readers of Beowulf, Anglo-Saxon poetry, early chronicles, religious prose, and medieval English language history, his reference work continues to have practical value.
