Many biomaterials have been tested as biosorbents for the removal of organic and metallic elements, especially heavy metals, from aqueous solutions. This work offers an understanding of the mechanisms of biosorption and its application in treating a variety of industrial wastewaters. Early chapters introduce biosorbents, overview biology and microbiology related to biosorption, and detail properties and applications of different types of biosorbents. Subsequent chapters look at biosorption isotherms and kinetics. Some general biosorption mechanisms are discussed, such as extracellular accumulation/precipitation, cell surface sorption/precipitation, and intracellular accumulation, as well as instrumental technologies employed for the study of these mechanisms. A chapter dedicated to biosorption capacity describes methods based on qualitative structure activity relationships (QSARs) in metal toxicity for investigating the effect of metal ion characteristics on metal uptake capacity in biosorption. The last chapter concludes that aerobic granules are ideal biosorbents for removal of heavy metals from industrial wastewater streams. The book is illustrated with color and b&w photos and images.
