She was born in Paris, although she spent her formative years in the countryside before relocating to Paris, where she rose to prominence in the literary and artistic worlds. Sand is renowned for leading an unorthodox lifestyle that includes dressing like a man, smoking cigars, and engaging in a number of affairs. Women's rights and issues of social justice were frequent topics in her work. Her best-known pieces are ""Consuelo,"" ""Indiana,"" and ""L�lia.""
