The best books are those which take from the reader the least amount of time and money in return for the most information. Dr. Citow and colleagues have done yeoman work in distilling the vast corpus of clinical neuroscience into this concise, yet readable book. The illustrations portray essential information. Young neurosurgeons preparing for the hurdles for professional examinations will find this to be a most valuable aid. I suspect that those who use it and become familiar with its contents will continue to browse through it as the years go by to refresh their memories. All those involved in the care of patients with neurological diseases will read this work to their advantage. It is remarkable that Dr. Citow had the ability to write this book while still in his residency. Future residents will have reason to be grateful for his industry. From the Author:
The amount of information that a neurosurgical resident must obtain in order to pass the written neurosurgery board exam is very intimidating. The massive amount of literature currently available pertaining to the neurological sciences is even more so. Over the last several years as I gradually accumulated the necessary information, I found certain texts to be particularly useful and I used these to gather the material for this book. As I constructed the project, I attempted to include the more important facts from the references listed below while omitting any lengthy discussions. Because there is a considerable overlap of topics and information in these books, I have tried to group them together to avoid excessive repetition. However, since repetition does enhance memory, the more important concepts tend to appear in several places. While this book is certainly not intended to replace the cornerstones of knowledge that I used as references, it does provide a single source that includes the vast majority of information needed to prepare for the written neurosurgery board exam. Though the principle target audience of this book is the poor and overworked neurosurgical resident, the material will certainly be useful for doctors, nurses, and students with an interest in neurology, pathology, radiology, and physiology.
