"For decades of the 20th century, Scottish theological students knew and used a trilogy of' works by Alexander Souter, Professor of Humanity at the University of Aberdeen ('humanity' is a term that originated in the Renaissance and has been used to describe the Latin department of Scottish universities). These works were Souter's edition or the Greek New Testament, "Novum Testamentum Graece," his discussion on "The Text and Canon of the New Testament," and "A Pocket Lexicon of the Greek New Testament." Souter was a very able classicist, who also produced some notable scholars. . . . I have used Souter's "Lexicon" ever since student days, and always considered it the best of the smaller Greek lexicons. Now it comes out with some editorial revision both in regard to current style (eg;, Arabic numeral, not Roman) and of the entries themselves. In the main, Souter's definitions have been preserved, but irregular forms such as futures and aorists have been inserted. The changes increase its usefulness and it will continue to serve students well. Souter's memory lives on in his apt definition of the meaning of words in the Greek New Testament, definitions that are sometimes better than much those in much larger lexicons."--"Reformed Theological Review"
