Adams (communication sciences and disorders, Valdosta State U.) helps parents of children with autism spectrum disorders address their child's needs. She describes treatments available and how to be critical when considering them; the importance of home organization, dietary challenges, sensory needs, and other home issues; the development of play and social skills, interventions, and pitfalls; supporting the child in school and the challenge of the hidden curriculum; behavior management; and insights from parents. This edition has two new chapters on Asperger's syndrome and the transition to adulthood, more hands-on activities, and a new appendix containing screening, diagnostic, and assessment tools, as well as expanded information on visual support strategies.
