Van Steenburgh always considered himself a novelist though his first book, Bury Them Young, based upon his experiences in World War II was not published nor was his second novel, The Iron Windmill, based upon his experiences of working in New York City. Moving to Litchfield, CT with his wife and three children, he established and led a series of "Read-Outs" at the libraries in Litchfield and Torrington and it was during this time that he accidentally discovered the poet Walt Whitman. As he has said so many times since, "this discovery changed my inner life." Soon he was writing a column for a local newspaper titled "Poet's Corner" in which he discussed a poem, poet, or some aspect of poetry. Finding the Metaphor is his first non-fiction effort.
