During the depression many teenage boys were dropping from school to work as day laborers, sometimes to assist their families to purchase food but often to make a little spending money for themselves. Buddy could have followed this path except he fell in love with Polly, a cute freckle-faced twelve-year old girl. Everything he did was to impress her.
It was not easy being in love with your next door neighbor, who had a steady boyfriend. There seemed to be no way for Buddy to overcome this obstacle. Time passed and Buddy left for the army air force in World War II, determined to live a happy-go-lucky life, free from his feelings for Polly.
When Buddy learned that Polly was engaged, there was a terrible vacuum in his life. He expected to be in combat soon. Maybe he would not return. Should he tell Polly of his love for her?
