Inhaltsangabe

Nine European researchers report findings from an international cooperative project identifying specific ways to facilitate the mobility of elderly people to help them participate in society and maintain quality of life in old age. The investigation consisted of several stages conducted at approximately the same time in urban regions with different settlement and transport infrastructures and in outskirts not frequently served by public transport in eastern and western Germany, Finland, and Italy; elements of the initial study were later conducted in a residential area in the Netherlands. By comparing various regions of Europe, the study reveals ways that the mobility of the elderly is affected by different infrastructures, the possession of means of transportation, and various cultural traditions, and suggests problem-solving alternatives and strategies for meeting the mobility needs of the elderly. Von der hinteren Coverseite

With today’s spatial separation of spheres of life, mobility has become an important aspect of ensuring one’s everyday life and social participation. Due to the decline of physical and sensory competences, older people will find it difficult to maintain the requisite levels of mobility and, by this, social well-being and quality of life. This book is based on a study carried out in four European countries (five regions), investigating how the mobility behavior of elderly men and women is affected by various individual resources and differing cultural and environmental conditions. It concludes with implications for problem-solving strategies for meeting the mobility needs of the ageing population.
