Zustand: Gut. Bilingual. VIII, 150 Seiten / p. minimal bestoßen, ansonsten tadelloser Zustand / minimally bumped, otherwise perfect condition - Preface -- Aeneid 4 tells the story of Dido's love for Aeneas, and her death at her own hands after Aeneas heeds Jupiter's command that he leave her and continue on to play his destined role in Italy. This volume is an introductory commentary on Aeneid 4 for use at the intermediate level or higher. It provides a generous amount of basic information about grammar and syntax, as well as a complete vocabulary at the back of the book, so that students of varying experience will have what they need to understand Vergil's Latin. At the same time, it addresses issues of interpretation and style so that students of all levels will have a richer experience of the poem. Finally it includes extensive bibliographical references that will help readers pursue areas of special interest. -- Like the other volumes in this series, the commentary takes as its starting point the notes in the valuable school edition of T.E. Page's Vergil: Aeneid 1-6 (1894); briefer and differently focused versions of the new commentaries will also appear together in volumes on Aeneid 1-6 and 7-12 aimed at more advanced students. When still useful for today's student, Page's comments have been retained, but on nearly every line consideration has been given to the differing needs of today's student, and to the opinions of a century of scholarship that post-dates Page, both on Vergil's Latin and on literary and interpretive questions. The general introduction is by Randall Ganiban, general editor of the commentaries on Aeneid 1-6, and my appendices on meter and on stylistic terms are adapted from those in his 2008 Aeneid 2 commentary, and in fact this Preface draws upon his as a model and even repeats some of his sentences. The vocabulary for Aeneid 4 is adapted from that of the MacMillan/St. Martin's Press school edition by Rev. H. M. Stephenson, originally published in 1888.
