Purdy (1904-90) was a leading scholar of the 20th century on British writer Hardy (1840-1928), and his 1954 study was published by Oxford University Press. It has continued to be recognized as both an authoritative bibliography and a biography drawing on early and exceptional access to Hardy's books and papers and information from his widow and others. Charles P.C. Pettit, a librarian in Oxfordshire County Council, augments a corrected reproduction of the 1979 printing with additional material: an introduction considering Purdy's work in the context of continuing Hardy studies, and a supplement in two parts, the first comprising a bibliography of works that expand or update Purdy's information, and the second a listing of errors and additional information. Co-published with the British Library. Annotation c. Book News, Inc., Portland, OR (booknews.com)
