BEHAVIOR IS WHAT YOU DO, NOT WHAT YOU KNOW

Diabetes is unlike any other medical conditions in one key and unique way: People with diabetes manage their own condition 95% of the time.

There are 7 key areas that require focus. They were identified by diabetes educators and are known as the AADE 7 Self Care Behaviors®:

  1. Healthy eating
  2. Being active
  3. Taking medication
  4. Monitoring
  5. Problem solving
  6. Reducing risks
  7. Healthy coping

Healthy eating tops the list. It’s not possible or practical to ask for medical advice every time you plan to eat, exercise, take medication, encounter an out of range blood glucose reading, or deal with a minor illness. A diabetes educator can help you set priorities and coach you on each of these areas. A registered dietitian nutritionist (RDN) can provided personalized guidance on eating. While you have a team of health professionals, you are the one who will make the day-to-day decisions about your diabetes care.

Knowing what you need to do and actually doing it are two very different things. For instance, you may know that your diabetes health care team recommended you walk at least 30 minutes every day, but maybe you can’t seem to find the time. Or maybe you know your diabetes educator recommended you check your blood glucose at least twice each day, but sticking your finger is not fun, so you avoid it. And maybe you know that a third piece of pizza will send your blood glucose way out of range, but it just tastes so good. How many times have you said, “I know what I should do, but I just can’t seem to do it?”
