Igor Bakshee has worked in the electronics industry and held research and senior research positions in the Ukraine and Japan. He has been a member of the Applications Development team at Wolfram Research since 1994 and wrote the award-winning application Control System Professional. He is also the author of Artlandia, a Mathematica-based application for creative graphic design. He founded Artlandia, Inc. in 1995 and has produced successful designs for major textile manufacturers in the U.S. and abroad. His designs have been licensed for clothing fabric, upholstery, automotive interiors, wall coverings, and fine art prints. Dr. Bakshee received his Ph.D. in physics from Moscow University.

Is there a mathematical pattern for beauty? Since the time of the ancient Greeks, artists have investigated the relationship between aesthetically pleasing designs and their geometric underpinnings. Usually this relation has been tenuous, since images built according to strict mathematical principles appear lifeless and static. Yet, as this volume demonstrates, these images can be enlivened through the carefully controlled use of random elements.

Igor Bakshee has spent years investigating the visual effects produced by different kinds of randomness. He developed the Artlandia application, which gives artists a high degree of control over a wide variety of random processes. This volume shows the results of Bakshee's investigations. From the beginning, these images have not been only utilitarian or scientific. Many who use Mathematica in research or education have also come to use it as an artistic tool for their private enjoyment. There are also a growing number of creative people, without any formal training in science or math, who are beginning to experiment with Mathematica in their design work. And by now Mathematica has been used for set design, special effects in animation, textile design, sculpture, and architecture. And no doubt there are a host of other applications that we are yet to hear about.
