This book is written for you, as a student who is learning about the world first-hand, and probably traveling abroad for the first time. It addresses the challenges of adapting thinking and behavior as you travel in an unfamiliar environment, of making the most of the opportunities, and of meeting and interacting with the locals.

Steven T. Duke serves as Executive Director of Global Student/Faculty Development, Research and Risk Management at Wake Forest University. In this role, he coordinates efforts to enhance professional development of faculty, including through the annual WISE Conference. He oversees the Cross-Cultural Engagement Program (CCE) for students and also coordinates risk-management efforts and support for students, faculty and staff who travel abroad. His research areas are: history of education in Russia, particularly during the late tsarist era, 1870's to 1914; history of ethnic minorities in the Russian empire and Soviet Union; history of Estonia, Latvia, Lithuania and Finland; international education and comparative education. Steve's teaching areas are in Russian and modern European history.
