Browning Jr., Ph.D., chief historian of the U.S. Coast Guard, wrote From Cape Charles to Cape Fear: The North Atlantic Blockading Squadron during the Civil War (winner of the John Lyman Book Award and the Jefferson Davis Award) and U.S. Merchant Vessel War Casualties of World War II. He lives in Dumfries, Virginia.
