One hundred & twenty-nine papers, presented in three volumes, represent the October 2001 conference held in Venice, Italy, attracting participants from 40 countries. It was the first conference in a planned biennial series, certain to enjoy sustained interest unless, of course, the problems of contaminated sediments suddenly disappear on their own. The first volume focuses on the characterization of contaminated sediments and includes contributions on various PCB-and PCDD/F-contaminated sites the Hudson River in New York state, Venice lagoons, and the coast of Japan and heavy metals-contaminated sites. Subsequent contributions discuss modeling for site characterization, and oil and gas industry-contaminated sediments. Volume 2, on management, covers policies, human-health risk and ecological risk assessment, toxicity measurements, dredging, and disposal facilities. The third volume is dedicated to various techniques and possibilities for remediation and beneficial reuse of contaminated sediments. Each volume contains a comprehensive index. Annotation c.
