Memories of shared and individual experiences; consciousness of guilt in their relationship with each other, their father, and especially Magda; revelations of a basic self-centeredness that lies at the heart of their failure to find lasting meaning for their lives; scenes of brief happiness, brutality, loneliness, conflict; a recurring preoccupation with death - all of these are employed by the author to call into question the validity of a modern existence that promotes the cause of the individual at the expense of interhuman relationships.
