Alchemy, considered in its totality, and as it has been understood and practiced throughout its long history, has to do not only with the physical domain of existence but with the subtle or psychological and spiritual domain as well. One must distinguish between a spiritual alchemy, whose subject matter is the soul and whose aim is its transformation, and a physical alchemy, which deals with various substances, especially metals, and is employed by artisans and members of craft guilds.
