" Learning Java " is a comprehensive introduction to the programming language that has changed the way we think about computing. Java has become the language of choice for a wide variety of applications : secure network programs, image processing and multimedia, web clients and servers, and mission-critical enterprise-wide systems. Java provides complete portability among all major computing platforms. Its advanced architectural features, such as object orientation and dynamic memory management, makes it clean and easy to program. " Learning Java " is a thorough update to " O'Reilly & Associates Exploring Java, 2nd Edition ". The text now reflects Java 2 SDK 1*3, the latest release from Sun Microsystems. The authors have adjusted the book's focus to match Java's changing focus : improved GUI programming tools, the emergence of servlets as an alternative to applets, the advent of APIs for multimedia and image processing, and more. The accompanying CD-ROM provides all you'll need to start working with Java immediately. It includes all of the book's example programs-more than 100-ready to compile and run. The CD also includes Java programming environments, including compiler and class libraries. Topics covered in " Learning Java " include : using object-oriented programming technique. Writing applets and servlets for the Web. Programming with threads and AW timers. Using advanced signed-applet features. GUI programming with Swing. Writing network clients and servers. Using the Collections API. Using the Java Media Framework, 2D graphics, and image-processing APIs. Creating reusable components with JavaBeans.

Pat is the author of BeanShell, an embeddable Java scripting language, and various other free goodies available on the Internet. He currently lives in the Central West End area of St. Louis with some cats and other creatures. Jonathan B. Knudsen (jonathan@oreilly.com) is an editor for O?Reilly & Associates, a job that allows him to exercise the right and left sides of his brain but little of his body. In 1977, when Jonathan was knee-high to a grasshopper, he began his computer career by programming in BASIC on a TRS-80. In 1993, he graduated cum laude from Princeton with a degree in mechanical engineering. Jonathan is still unsure what mechanical engineers do for a living. He is author of Java Cryptography, Java 2D Graphics, and The Unofficial Guide to LEGO(TM) MINDSTORMS(R) Robots. He writes a monthly online column called "Bite-Size Java" and has authored articles about LEGO robotics for the O?Reilly Network. Jonathan lives in New Jersey with his wife and technical advisor, Kristen, his children, Daphne, Luke, and Andrew, and two black and white cats. In his spare time, he enjoys playing the piano and bicycling.
