This is the first in a series of finance guides for middle-income families and singles. Scott, a finance instructor, presents a step-by-step process for establishing a simple personal budget. The book uses simple language and clear tables in describing a useful budgeting system that is easy to set up and maintain. In addition, included at the end of each chapter is a "Dollar Stretchers" section, which presents helpful hints to save money. One drawback is the exclusion of forms to use in setting up a budget; instead, the book asks the reader to use ledger paper or pencil and ruler. Finally, Scott includes a chapter showing how to construct a budget using Lotus 123 computer software. A useful guide for public libraries.
