Writing Math Research Papers serves both as a text for students and as a resource for instructors, administrators, and preservice teachers. It systematically describes how to write a research paper, from the prewriting work of problem solving and reading mathematics effectively to the postwriting work of making math research presentations and entering math contests.

The appendices include samples from student papers, information about math contests, and sources for finding research topics. Appendix C: A Guide for Instructors and Administrators gives practical suggestions for implementing a math research program as a separate course or within existing math courses.

Robert Gerver, Ph.D., an experienced mathematics educator and author, has implemented a successful math research program and has shared his success with many instructors and students across the country. Dr. Gerver’s writings about using math research in the classroom have been featured in NCTM’s 1999 Yearbook, Developing Mathematical Reasoning in Grades K–12, and NCTM’s Developing Mathematically Promising Students. His curriculum project, "Investigations in Math Research,” was selected for a 1997 Chevron Education Award for Best Classroom Practices.
