Although it is one of the smallest countries in Europe, Holland is also one of the most beautiful, charming, and accessible to visitors. The combination of enchanting towns and villages, breathtaking landscapes, and cosmopolitan urban centers is one that has been irresistible to millions of people from all over the world.
Through remarkable images and incisive text, Bryan Peterson and Helen Colijn pay tribute to the beloved land, people, and history of Holland. Revel in images of tulip fields and flat, fertile landscapes punctuated by windmills, old-world canals, and new-world architecture. Delight in the colorful Keukenhof, the flower market in Aalsmeer, and the huge, open skies. Marvel at the sophistication and cultural diversity of Amsterdam and Rotterdam, and the stateliness of The Hague. See the play of light on this land reclaimed from the sea, and discover why this light, in combination with the details of daily life, has inspired Europe's greatest artists for centuries.
Professional photographer Bryan Peterson is an instructor and a journalist and has lived and photographed both in Holland and in other European countries. He has received numerous regional and national awards for his work. When not in Europe, he makes his home in Portland, Oregon.
Helen Colijn has drawn upon her years of living in Holland and visiting the country to provide a marvelous and knowledgeable text to accompany Mr. Peterson's spectacular images. She has written about Holland for Sunset magazine and has authored several books, The Backroads of Holland, Of Dutch Ways, and Song of Survival: Women in a Prison Camp.
Monique Schussler, who researched and wrote the captions, is Dutch and makes her home in Hoorn, Holland.
Together, the photos and text intertwine in a balance nearly as intricate as that of the land and the water in this romantic and picturesque country called Holland.
