This powerful novel will remind many young adults of Sylvia Plath’s The Bell Jar. James Bennett’s portrayal of a brilliant but disturbed young woman provides a deeply sensitive and perceptive exploration of some of the most devastating issues young adults face today—including suicide, rape, and the death of a parent.

James Bennett draws us into the frightening and painful world of mental illness through the mind and heart of teen-aged Grace, who is struggling to recover from her father's death and her own suicide attempt. Barbara Rosenblat's highly dramatic performance is ultimately unsatisfying. Grace's voice is annoyingly childish, rather than youthful, and shifts from actual to internal dialogue are difficult to follow. Vocalization of Luke, the single male character, is especially disappointing. The story loses its momentum and drive. Young adults will be fascinated by Grace's struggle but may lack the patience to hear her story through to the end. D.M.L. (c)AudioFile, Portland, Maine
