John (Jack) Enternach
John (Jack) Echternach has been a physical therapist for more than 45 years. He graduated from West Chester University, West Chester, Pa, with a bachelor of science degree in health and physical education. Following this, he attended the University of Pennsylvania and obtained a certificate in physical therapy. Shortly after graduation, Dr. Echternach was commissioned as a physical therapy officer in the US Public Health Service where he served for the next 24 years. During this time, Dr. Echternach served many positions, from staff physical therapist to chief of the physical therapy department to the officer-in-charge of occupational and physical therapy activities in the Division of Hospitals and Clinics of the US Health Service. During his career in the US Public Health Service, Dr. Echternach obtained a master's degree in anatomy from the University of Maryland and a doctor of education in higher education/administration from the College of William and Mary, Williamsburg, Va.
Following his career in the US Public Health Service, Dr. Echternach became a faculty member at Old Dominion University, where he began the Physical Therapy Education Program and remained its director until 1992. During his time at Old Dominion University, he has also served as chairman of the School of the Community Health Professions and Physical Therapy. Dr. Echternach continues his career as a faculty member at Old Dominion University with the designation of professor and eminent scholar in the School of Physical Therapy.
Dr. Echternach remains active in conducting an electrophysiological testing practice working with primarily upper extremity problems. Dr. Echternach has published several professional papers on a variety of topics and authored chapters in several textbooks. He has served as editor of two textbooks and has authored two books relating to physical therapy practice.
