Lucy Maud Montgomery (1874-1942) was a Canadian novelist, short story writer, poet, and one of the most beloved authors in children's and women's literature. Born on Prince Edward Island, she was raised largely by her maternal grandparents after her mother's death and her father's departure for western Canada. The landscapes, villages, farms, shorelines, customs, and emotional textures of Prince Edward Island became central to her fiction, giving her work a strong sense of place that remains one of its greatest appeals.Montgomery achieved international fame with Anne of Green Gables, published in 1908, introducing Anne Shirley, the imaginative red-haired orphan whose intelligence, temper, longing, and fierce capacity for love made her one of literature's most enduring heroines.
