Rezensionen

Gr. 5^-8. Here's a book that gets kids to think about television as well as watch it. Graphically pleasing and written in an easy-to-comprehend style, it shows children how television works on viewers psychologically; how television shows are developed, tested, aired, and canceled; and how commercials are designed and used, among many other topics. Readers are asked questions throughout, both within the body of the text and in sidebars. For instance, in a discussion of television violence, readers are asked to consider violent acts they have seen on TV, everything from war scenes on the six o'clock news to the Three Stooges poking each other in the eye. Interspersed with the text are interviews with people working in television, in front of and behind the camera. Sometimes they say things that are unintentionally illuminating. For instance, a casting director remarks, "Take a TV movie based on a real-life story--the woman in the story may be fat and pimply in real life, but you can't show this on TV because nobody would watch her." Kids who really want to talk back to TV are offered numerous addresses where they can voice their opinions. Excellent. Ilene Cooper
