Yesterday’s Gone is the epic saga of intersecting lives whirling parallel to one another like the spiraling sides of double helix, always together always separate. The unrelenting action begins with the first paragraph and accelerates to the last page. It is the story of Hudson Catlin, the clairvoyant son of an Arkansas bootlegger, Thornton Drake (AKA Cherry), the iron-willed, independent heir to a vast industrial and financial empire and Franklin Crockett, prodigal son of a charlatan TV Evangelist. With a colorful supporting cast of characters this epic spans the globe from Vietnam to middle America and ultimately to the corridors of the White House. Hudson’s and Thornton’s lives are irreparably changed by an artillery barrage during the Tet Offensive. Thornton’s ordeal costs him his memory and his destiny but he plays a deadly and pivotal role in history for the next three decades. Hudson returns to northwestern Arkansas a reluctant disillusioned Medal of Honor recipient. Along with his childhood friend, Frank Crockett, Hudson is never far from the larger events of history as Frank is elected Governor of Oklahoma and the first third party candidate to become President of the United States. Meanwhile, in the shadows of anonymity, former OSS agent Abe Bennett and super patriot accrues power within the intelligence deep state. Bennett’s patriotism becomes jingoistic and jaded by hubris and the lure of power and wealth. A final climactic confrontation pits Christian right-wing militia, Colombia cowboys and government spooks against the constitutional elected administration.
