Ellen Theodora Madigan is spending a year in a small lake town in the mountains of western Maine after spending much of her life living near her dad's archaeological dig sites in other countries. Before long, she’s having strange dreams about Abenaki Native Americans, the first inhabitants of the area who seem to have disappeared and encountering loons on the water which she senses are trying to communicate. Her paranormal sensitivity goes on alert and she knows there’s a mystery to be solved.

Joan Wright Mularz was born into a large family on an island in the middle of New York Harbor. It's where she read her first mystery and learned to love reading, writing and drawing. Since then, she has lived in three countries and has traveled to five continents. Her experiences as a traveler, parent and a teacher, made her want to write for young people. Two and a half years living in Italy became the inspiration for her first E. T. Madigan mystery, "Upheavals at Cuma." Six years in Germany led to the writing of the second mystery, "White Flutters in Munich." Her picture book, "What I Like About My Friends," celebrates the diversity she found through both teaching and travel and another, "Island Times," celebrates the multiplication and diversity of animal and plant life found on islands. She loves learning languages and exploring new places but she and her husband love having New England as a home base. More than 30 years ago, they were drawn to the beauty of the Rangeley Lakes region of Maine and built a vacation home there with their own labor and the help of family and friends. Rangeley is the inspiration for her alliterative alphabet book, "Down West - the Other Maine." The fact that the area is dotted with Abenaki place names, but few if any Abenaki residents, gave Joan the germ of an idea for the third E.T. Madigan Mystery-"Maine Roots Run Deep." Joan has also written curriculums and educational grants and is a member of The Society for Children's Book Writers and Illustrators, Sisters in Crime, Children's Writers By the Sea, Newburyport Writers and Independent Publishers of New England.
