“I’m no saint.”
How many times have you heard something like this? It is an all too convenient excuse for having committed one of the seven deadly sins. It may come with an apology, or is more likely implied to be one. All is usually quickly forgiven and forgotten. It seems we generally accept this defense too willingly.
Instead, why don’t we actually strive to become saints? Wouldn’t this resolve all of our self-created world problems? Seriously, if we were all determined to be our best selves, to serve others and to behave virtuously at all times, what problem could survive? Why shouldn’t this be our aim? Why not make it our goal to become as saintly as possible here on earth? Through God’s grace maybe we will even make it to heaven and gain eternal life.
But without a plan, we will fail. As Benjamin Franklin aptly put it, “If you fail to plan, you are planning to fail.”
This book is designed to guide you through a simple process to develop your own personalized action plan to strive for sainthood. It also provides a scoring system to keep track of your daily progress.
But be forewarned, the process is simple but the work is challenging. It may be uncomfortable. You will need to find some time in your already busy schedule to reflect on your past, present and desired future. You will be making important course of life decisions. And in the end you may be committing yourself to a whole new way of life. Only you can decide whether becoming the person you were destined to be, improving the world around you and intentionally striving to gain eternal life are worth the effort. It will take courage to begin, diligence to persist and faith to succeed.
Take a moment to imagine a world full of saintly people. Will you be one? It’s your choice. Free will. Will you be a saint or an ain’t?
