Does humanity depend on flesh and blood and being born of human parents? Is it possible for a machine to become human — to become too human? Philip Edge returns from a mission mapping the moons of Uranus to find that all of Earth’s people have departed, leaving him to work out questions of humanity with only the help of a machine. Working from the belief that if a problem can be stated it can be solved, Edge finds that the answers are not what he ever would have expected.

the first ones was Bart Bare’s first attempt as a writer. He began it in 1995, and here it is—only twenty years later. Bart’s first novel, Satan’s Bargain, was published in 2007. His second, Girl: A Novel, in 2010 and his third, Wadmalaw, A Ghost Story in 2011 were published by Canterbury House Publishing. Bart self-published his fourth novel, SS Jew in 2014. Bart taught psychology at Caldwell Community College for 27 years, retiring in 1997. He received his A.A. from St. Petersburg Jr. College in St. Petersburg, Florida, his B.A. from the University of South Florida and his M.A. in psychology from Appalachian State University in 1974. He completed an EdS in Adult Education in the mid-1980s. Underpinning his writing is a set of diverse experiences. He was a Sergeant in the paratroopers at Fort Bragg and Germany. He was a community organizer in the mountains of North Carolina during President Johnson’s War on Poverty. As a youth he worked in construction, retail sales, bulldozing and landscaping. He also raced stock and sports cars and operated shrimp boats. He is past-president of High Country Writers of Watauga County, NC. In March 2012, Bart purchased an eighty-year-old business, Grandfather Country Store, located on an Eastern slope of Grandfather Mountain just outside of Blowing Rock, NC. He had been a customer at that store for thirty years and was saddened to watch it fall into decline. Elbow grease and imagination have revitalized the business, which Bart is now running until a buyer can be found. Meanwhile it is nice, on cold winter days, to sit by the pot belly stove while writing the next Great American Novel.
