Hans von Grimmelshausen was a 17th-century German author. Grimmelshausen was kidnapped as a young boy by a Hessian soldier and ended up seeing much of the Thirty Years' War as a result. Grimmelshausen's most famous work is The Adventurous Simplicissimus. The Adventurous Simplicissimus is a picaresque novel that was inspired by the events of the Thirty Years' War. The book, published in 1669, is considered the first classic in German literature.
