A not-too-serious handbook of Geordie and Northumbrian, suitable for adults and older children (learners and native speakers), based on words and phrases of North East dialect which have been recorded in the 19th, 20th and 21st centuries. As well as basic word lists, there are collections of proverbs, folklore, poetry, lists of personal and place names, and the occasional Geordie joke.

Brendan Riley was born in Blyth, Northumberland where he grew up in the 60s and 70s when the local dialect was much stronger than it is today. He has had a life-long commitment to campaigns which promote and educate people about and in minority languages and dialects. He is fluent in several languages, and has spent decades as an active member of several Irish and Welsh speaking organisations. As well as more serious literary and linguistic research he has written on Northumbrian culture and mythology for the regional press in the North East, and as a gigging artist has performed original and older songs and poems in the dialect.
