This autobiography, written when Harold was in his late 80s, takes you on a journey through his life, from his birth in Nappanee, Indiana, to his days serving in the 153rd Field Artillery Group in World War 2. Filled with all the humility, and good humor that made the Greatest Generation so great, this slice of life account tells it how it was. Initially a field artillery instructor, Harold soon became head of the Field Artillery Replacement Training Corps Motors Department. After a six month stint in Gunnery Research testing soldiers' night vision acuity, Harold became attached to a combat unit, the 153rd Field Artillery Group. He saw limited combat in the Battle of Ruhr Pocket, and soon took over processing of displaced persons for XXII Corps, for which he was given an honorable citation. His tireless efforts repatriating POWs and Nazi prisoners was a satisfying yet stressful chapter in his life. After the war Harold went to work for Studebaker, staying with them until they shuttered the plant in South Bend, Indiana. He then worked for American Motors, and even helped launch their joint venture in China, the Beijing Jeep Corporation. Harold has truly led an interesting, and inspirational life. Whatever small errors he made in writing this book were left in place to insure that the book would maintain his legacy. The book includes notes, and additional information provided by his grandson Stephen Andrew Bola.
