Excerpt from Dependence of Sound Absorption Upon the Area and Distribution of the Absorbent Material
To determine what effect a combination of materials would have in a room, the absorption coefficients so determined are substituted in the same formula using the volume of the room and the respective areas as given by the design. The reverberation time computed in this way is expected to give some idea of the reverberation time which the room would have after it is constructed.' In deriving this formula certain assumptions are made as follows: (1) The reflected sound energy flux over any portion of the surface is a definite fraction (1 a) of the incident sound energy flux, where a is defined as the absorption coefficient of the material.
