To those of us who hve In Southern and Central Chma, 1t rs obvxous that a good many of the characters m these lists are not the ones that we would select to represent the sounds of the Western names here grven But we must agree on something for the sake of unlformity m the use of names m our school and text books. It 1s perhaps useless to expect that any 11st of characters selected for the purpose W111 harmomze ent1rely for the northern Mandarrn and the dralects of Central and Southern Chlna, and even for the southern Mandarm So 1t has been thought best by the Commlttee, and the Assocration at lts last meetlng, to publlsh these hsts as a standard for use in transla tlon, wh1le at the same time, callmg for suggestrons, from any who may be dlsposed to glve them as to any 1mprovements that may be made ln the hsts so as the better to harmomze the dlfi'erences ln the varlous dlalects of the country.
