N 0 one realizes better than the author the lack of inter est generally taken in steam vessels. The sailing ship and every part of her historyhas been dealt with by many well informed and interesting writers. In spite of the vital part played in the modern world by the steam-driven craft, she has but few admirers and still fewer historians. However, the early records dealing with the development of steam navigation are valuable, and if not preserved, will soon be lost, and many have already disappeared. Hence the reason for this little book, which does not pre tend to be a complete or chronological history of steam navigation along the coast of New England, but rather a series of comprehensive notes for the use of the student or future historian.
