Philadelphia is the seat of the oldest public library in the United States that founded by Benjamin Franklin, who calls it in his Autobiography, the mother of all North American subscription libraries. Other learned institutions, the American Philosophical Society and the University of Pennsylvania gratefully acknowledge their indebtedness to the same far-sighted, public-spirited genius and still carry'on his plans of benefiting the community by maintaining libraries. According to the Report of the United States Bureau of Education for 1903 Phila delphia had then 120 public, society and school libraries.
