The requirements which need discussion may be classified as per taining to either (1) goniometry or (2) the knowledge and control of the conditions which. Affect the velocity of light in various media. The present paper, being introductory in character, deals only with a portion of the first of these categories, and it refers particularly to minimum-deviation spectrometry of the visible spectrum because the experimental work in progress in this refractometric laboratory is limited chiefly to that field.
