Excerpt from The Character of the Star Image in Spectrographic Work
These experiments conclusively prove that the abnormal width of spectra and trails in photographic light is not due to aberrations in the spectroscope nor to atmospheric disturbances, and clearly point to aberrations in the condensing svstem as the cause of the observed effects. A short summary of the experimental data will render this more evident. The theoretical diameter of the central disk, or rather of the first dark ring, for visual light a 5600, is 0374, for photographic light, X 4340, is 0357. The actual width of visual spectra and trails is from 1 to or one and one-half to three times the theoretical diameter. The actual width of photographic spectra and trails is from 3 to or five to eight times the theoretical diameter.
