The reception the book has met with has exceeded my most hopeful anticipations. I have interpreted it to mean that a work of this kind was needed, and it has compelled me to put forth my utmost endeavour to render the book of service to those engaged in the practice of surgery.

I desire especially to acknowledge the help which I have derived from the work of three surgeons whose contributions to the literature of abdominal surgery are of the very highest importance. I refer to Dr. W. J. Mayo, Dr. J. B. Murphy, and to my former colleague, Mr. Mayo Robson. The mention of their names in the following pages, frequent though it be, is imade quate to express the manifold advantages I have derived from a study of their work or from the privilege of watching their practice.
