MY purpose in the following pages has been to give such suggestions concerning the sounds, inflections, and syntax of the Latin language, as experience has shown are likely to prove of service to teachers and advanced students. In the former part of the work I have drawn freely upon the standard manuals of Seel mann, Brugmann, Stolz, and Lindsay; in the syntax I wish to acknowledge my indebtedness not only to Delbruck's recently published Verg/ez'cizena'e Sym'ax, but especially, for the moods, to the syntactical studies of Professor W. G. Hale, of the University of Chicago.
