It was thought desirable by the Proprietors to diminish the extent and expense of the Thesaurus, so as to render it accessible to the less wealthy; and to add an English, as well as Latin, translation, for the benefit of the young and less informed. I was requested to undertake the work; and, I own, engaged in it with some reluctance; because, in addition to the pressure of professional engagements and studies, it threatened a very serious amount of labour. However, I have now spared no pains to accomplish the ends in view;' and, while the size of the book has been greatly diminished, the-utmost care has been taken to condense into a small compass as much real information as possible. Above all, it has been my aim, so far as the limits of my design would permit, to make the quotations complete in metre or in meaning.
