Excerpt from A New Method of Measuring Heights by Means of the Barometer

The change proposed in this paper is of a radical nature. Since the time of Laplace the hypsometric formula he developed has formed the groundwork of all investigation and practice. Later writers have made formal modification of some of its terms and have added a term of some importance, and modern physical research has made slight cor rections to the values of several of the constants he employed, but the essential features of the formula have not been changed. It is here proposed to abandon it entirely for the greater part of hypsometric work and to substitute a new formula involving none of his constants and having but a single element in common.

For more than a century the thermometer has been the constant com pamon of the barometer, and in nearly all the best work of recent times the psychrometer also has been called in play. The new method aban dons both psychrometer and thermometer and employs the barometer alone.
