Excerpt from Fall 1951: Cover Collection of Tulips
Tulips are easy to grow - even for an amateur. The most im portant factors for success are good drainage, full sun and thorough soil preparation to 12 inches. Bulbs should be set about 5 to 6 inches deep on a 1é-inch layer of sand. Feeding with bonemeal in the fall and with a general fertilizer in the spring will be beneficial. A light mulch ofsalt hay or similar material should be applied in winter where temperatures are severe. Bulbs should not be lifted - either for stor age during the summer or for transplanting directly - until the foliage has completely ripened or turned yellow.
