But by the turn of the century the output of instruments of heme manufactd?fwas in definite decline. A severe depression in the iarly nineties inafiégated the slump. The lowering of freight rates by the trans-continental railroad added to this, and with the even cheaper transportation that came in 1915 with the Opening of the Panama Canal, San Erancisco's fate as a mecca for instrument makers, was sealed. Though a handful of craftsmen continued to turn out.
