The principle which governs the action of this type of flow meter is that of the Pitot-piezometer method of measuring velocity of water. If a Pitot tube be placed in a stream of water, the water in the tube will rise somewhat above the level of the water, due to the impact of tha water against the face of the submerged end of the tube, and the height to which it rises is dependent upon the velocity of the flow.
